UNDERSTAND YOUR RESULTS

We use a data-driven approach to reduce racism in policing.

Many people believe that racial discrimination, or treating someone unfavorably based on their perceived racial identity, is caused by bad intentions and bad character. They also believe that achieving equity therefore depends on changing hearts and minds, one-by-one—a seemingly impossible task. But science tells us that situations and systems more strongly predict people’s behavior than their beliefs alone. And unlike feelings, situations and systems can be measured.

Nearly every police department in the U.S. uses COMPSTAT, a process to track crime data and identify trends. We believe that all departments can and should use data to measure and eliminate racism in their practices. The Justice Navigator is a tool to help departments and communities take the first step of using data to end racism in policing.
